Eighteen Life Lines on the Eighteenth of the Month

I is the bane of my existence
I thought early on
when fear of the dark
and my parents’ someday death
and my chronic unsuitedness
made me dream of dying ahead of time.

I is the boon of my existence
I believed and didn’t believe
when living happened anyway
and I couched myself in
comfortable certainties
that later fell apart.

I is the bone of my existence
suffices today
like the elbow I banged last spring
that still hurts but works
enough to rely on
for years to come.
